Food is complicated. It’s a key controller of our state of health or disease. It’s a social centerpiece for the most important moments of our lives. It’s the building block that creates our brain, enabling us to have thought, feeling, and emotion. It’s the very stuff that makes up our bodies and what we see looking back at us in the mirror. Food isn’t just food. It’s the thing that makes us who we are. So why does figuring out what to eat feel so overwhelming?
In Eat Smarter, nutritionist, bestselling author, and #1-ranked podcast host Shawn Stevenson breaks down the science of food with a 30-day program to help you lose weight, reboot your metabolism and hormones, and improve your brain function. Most importantly, he explains how changing what you eat can transform your life by affecting your ability to make money, sleep better, maintain relationships, and be happier. Eat Smarter will empower you and make you feel inspired about your food choices, not just because of the impact they have on your weight, but because the right foods can help make you the best version of yourself.

Nutrition, Science, and Humor, oh my!!
I didn’t know I could laugh and learn about nutrition at the same time. This book was so fun to read! And, I learned SO MUCH. I’m a certified Health Coach and Functional Nutrition Counselor, all around health geek, and this book showed me there is so much more to know. It’s really hard to break down super complex nutrition and health concepts and share it in an entertaining, interesting way that anyone can understand and relate to. This book addresses fad diets, popular beliefs and common misconceptions, spirituality, lifestyle, Politics of food, and the truth of nutrition and human function based off science, research and Shawn’s personal experience. Want to know what to eat? Read this book!In addition to the information provided, I got recipe recommendations and access to the 30 day Eat Smarter plan. Obviously I haven’t done it yet but I plan to check it out. I appreciate that there are actionable things provided for readers in addition to the information and education provided in the book.I’ve been a big fan of Shawn and the Model Health Show for years. Reading this book solidified that Shawn is at the top of the Nutrition Science game and understands people and how complex food can be. I wish it were as simple as “Eat your Veggies”, but it’s just not. Getting some guidance for how to navigate nutrition in such an entertaining, understandable, non-judgmental way is really refreshing.

Gives us the knowledge to make our own decisionsâ¦
This book is not about perfection, itâs about giving us the knowledge to help improve our health wherever we are at in our life today.Iâve been listening to Shawn for years through his The Model Health Show Podcast where he interviews experts that are known from all over. He has helped me in so many more ways than heâll ever know. Heâs information has provided me the foundation I needed to heal my own body after dealing with health issues for years. Through his teachings heâs got be fascinated with the health of our bodies using nutrition, sleep, exercise, and more. Over the last five years, I have read and listened to more than 4,000 hours of books and podcasts that cover nutrition and health. Itâs obvious heâs spent years of researching and consolidating peer-reviewed evidence-based studies, so we donât have to. So thankful for all he has done for me and others through his teaching. There have been so many books Iâve wanted and tried to share with family and friends, but I knew it would be too overwhelming for them. In Eat Smarter, Shawn does a wonderful job, as always, at breaking everything down in a way that itâs easy for others to digest the information and really understand what is going on within you body. He covers how your hormones work, or are suppose to work, along with how different foods affect our bodies. Within, Eat Smarter he breaks down the myths we have been taught throughout our life while providing us highlights from fascinating studies. He also throws in some great humor to keep it fun and entertaining. For anyone looking to improve loose weight, improve gut health, or wants to just learn more of how the body communicates this is the book for you! He does a great job at staying high level to keep the amount of information digestible. He also provides a game plan for long-term lasting success in staying healthy along with delicious and tasty recipes that give you great nutrition, too.He gives us the information we need to make educated food decisions and not subscribe to a specific diet as we have been taught in the past. Makes me curious and think of even more questions I would love for him to cover in Eat Smarter Too (fingers-crossed).

Page turner
Shawn Stevenson combines real life vignettes, incredible science, and plenty of analogies to tie it all together. I laughed out loud many times reading, I connected with his upbringing and misconceptions around diet and health, and in general was able to follow the technical aspects. This book feels to me like a compilation of all the great books I have read, merging science and practicality, but taking out the one-size-fits-all and fanaticism of most programs. He offers a great plan that actually has flexibility and a focus on connection with others and mental health. I donât think in all my reading has an author combined so many healthful ways of living AND encouraged their readers to have grace for the bumps they will have. When he said to shoot for 80% compliance, I was intrigued. When he said to change macros around for what feels right for my body and my life schedule, I was in! Intermittent fasting isnât new, nor is the idea that low carb can be healthier for more people, as well as the need for pre- and probiotics. This truly felt like he took a lot of different ways of eating healthy and combined them in a manageable lifestyle.I have to say the most important part to me was the section on eating together as a family. Iâm not a great cook, I do my best but it isnât always up to the standards I set for myself, but to know that sitting down with my kids each day to share dinner, and with my husband on the weekends when he isnât working is a POSITIVE and HEALTH-AFFIRMING choice not only for me but to be a good influence on my kids made my heart swell. I have decided to be healthy to be a better example for my children, and this section helped me to see ways that Iâm already doing well, even if there are other ways I can improve. In fact, I sat down and talked with my kids about eliminating candy and soda or juice and read part of the book to them about sugar. We discussed the natural desire for sweets, and came up with a plan to make flavored kombucha for each of us (we already like âboochâ and brew it at home, but Mt Dew flavored? That will be a first!) and to bake cookies and cake with added healthy nutrients. Explaining that itâs natural to want sweets but that candy and juice bring no nutrients was helpful to my kids, AND not cutting them off cold turkey will help us all to be on board. Plus having them help bake will help me ðI read this book in less than a week. I feel empowered and affirmed. I want to be healthy as a family and this book truly spoke to me at my level. Iâm so thankful for the message and the heartwarming stories.

Shawn has such an entertaining writing style and this book inspired me to up my game in the realms of nutrition. He actually makes eating healthy EXCITING! Even though I’ve been “eating healthy” for years, I haven’t kept up on the newest science of food and how it impacts our gut biome, our brain, and our sleep. Shawn does such a great job at bringing all of that science and research together in a fun way. This book that helped me understand why food really is the foundation for our own health and happiness, and the physical and emotional health of our families. From the most cutting edge science on fat loss, to emotional health + optimizing your brain and sleep health, this is a very well rounded resource for beginners and dedicated health nuts alike.

I originally bought a copy from Indigo and loved it so much that I bought this copy for a friend! (Great deal and the delivery time was fast!). Iâve recommended others to buy – itâs awesome – Iâve studied nutrition (certified) – and the information in this book is delivered in a way that itâs very easy to understand even if you have no nutritional background knowledge. I think everyone should read this!!
